Joseph A. Griffo is a committed public servant who represents all of Oneida and Madison counties as well as portions of Chenango and Herkimer counties. A lifelong resident of Rome, Joe’s deep roots in the community and his extensive experience in both local and state government make him uniquely qualified to serve the interests and address the challenges of his constituents.

Joe’s public service career began at the grassroots level, working his way up from an intern to mayor of Rome for three terms. As mayor, he safeguarded the local hospital and spearheaded economic revival after the closure of Griffiss Air Force Base. As Oneida County Executive, Joe helped secure over 600 new jobs at Griffiss Business and Technology Park, showcasing his ability to navigate complex systems for the benefit of the region and setting the stage for a remarkable economic development turnaround.
Proven Leadership in the State Senate
In the Senate, Joe serves as Assistant Minority Leader and the ranking member on the Higher Education Committee. As the former chair of the Energy & Telecommunications Committee, he championed policies that promoted competition, encouraged investment, and streamlined regulations, keeping costs down and facilitating the growth of renewable energy technologies.

Joe’s extensive volunteer work and leadership roles in community organizations demonstrate his dedication to family values and service. From co-chairing the Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus to serving on the board of the New York State Association of Counties, Joe embodies the spirit of service he brings to his role as a state senator. Joe and his wife, Lorraine, a teacher, proudly call Rome home, living the values of education, community, and public service every day.
